Department of Poetics

Once brought together, the various elements of typographic masonry affect one and another and charge visual languages with a certain effect or repercussion. This section, The Department of Poetics, brings these palettes of effects into focus. Often confused with poetry, as the expression itself, poetics designate the structures and effects of the poetic gesture. You see, like the epic utilises language as linguistic instruments, the typographic mason manipulates aspects including ink, paper, binding, printing technique, type, image, form and composition in order to evoke feelings, emotions, associations and response.

By appealing to interpretation, graphic design is irrevocably a poetic act. It is not only the convergence of image and text but also the compositional organisation and methods of its production that form the rhetorical instruments to constitute effect and direct the interpretation of the graphic expression.
